Newcomb
One volleyball or soft ball, a net or rope strung between two poles, cones
How to play
Divide players into two equal teams on either side of a net, similar to a volleyball court. One team serves by throwing the ball over the net. The receiving team must catch the ball before it hits the ground and then throw it back over the net. Players may take up to three catches on their side before the ball must go over the net. A point is awarded if the opposing team drops the ball or if it lands out of bounds. Teams cannot run with the ball. First team to reach a set number of points wins.
Variations
Require the ball to be passed to two teammates before going over the net. Play with a lower net or rope to make it accessible for younger students.
